First Class Boarding Accommodation For Cats

L-Lysine
Unlike dogs, who require a kennel cough vaccination before boarding, there is currently no similar vaccine to protect cats from the common cold. Upper respiratory infections can spread easily in any boarding environment, which is why proactive care is so important.
To help minimize this risk, we recommend that all cats receive a supplement called L-Lysine. L-Lysine is not a medication—it’s an essential amino acid that supports immune health and helps prevent the cold virus from multiplying. For best results, it should be given before, during, and after your cat’s stay.
We kindly ask that cats begin taking L-Lysine for approximately 14 days prior to arrival and continue for about 14 days after returning home. L-Lysine is widely available at pet stores and online, and comes in several forms such as treats, gels, and powders. In our experience, the powder form is the easiest to give, as it mixes well into food. Human-grade L-Lysine (usually 500 mg capsules) can also be used—simply open the capsule and mix a small amount into soft food or tuna, gradually increasing to one capsule per day as your cat becomes accustomed to the taste.
We also recommend keeping L-Lysine on hand year-round. During certain seasons, “cat flu” tends to circulate, and early use of L-Lysine at the very first sign of sneezing or sniffles can be very effective. However, if a cat is already quite ill, L-Lysine will no longer be helpful and veterinary attention will be needed. As always, prevention is the best approach to keeping your cat healthy and comfortable.
If you have any questions about L-Lysine or preparing your cat for their stay with us, we’re always here to help.
